The Nigerian Army is undertaking a major strategic push to address the nation's security challenges, with a new battalion deployment to a troubled region and a massive recruitment drive approved by the President.
New Battalion for Kwande, Benue State
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has announced the deployment of a new battalion to Kwande Local Government Area in Benue State. The move is a direct military response designed to strengthen ongoing operations and restore lasting peace to communities grappling with persistent insecurity.
Shaibu made the disclosure on Thursday during a courtesy visit to Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, at the Government House in Makurdi. The visit was part of the COAS's operational tour of military formations in the North Central zone.
Boosting Air Power and Mobility
Beyond ground troops, the Army Chief outlined plans to significantly enhance the military's aviation assets. A key component of this expansion includes providing dedicated helicopters for Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), the joint security task force operating in the North Central region. This aerial support is expected to drastically improve troop mobility and response times to emerging threats, boosting the effectiveness of counter-insurgency and peacekeeping missions.
Historic Recruitment Drive: 28,000 New Troops
In perhaps the most significant announcement, Lieutenant General Shaibu revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment and training of over 28,000 new personnel within the next year. This substantial injection of manpower is aimed at strengthening the nation's overall security architecture and addressing critical personnel shortages within the armed forces.
State Collaboration is Key
During the meeting, the COAS commended Governor Alia and the Benue State Government for their tangible support to military operations. He specifically highlighted the provision of vital operational assets—including drones, motorcycles, and vehicles—to troops stationed in the state. This collaboration between federal forces and state governments is cited as a crucial factor for successful security operations.
This dual strategy of targeted deployment and large-scale recruitment signals a renewed and intensified effort by the Nigerian Army and the Federal Government to reclaim ungoverned spaces and ensure the safety of citizens across the nation.
