In a significant development for air travel and religious pilgrimage in Nigeria, Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, has been formally integrated into the national framework for Hajj operations. This follows a pivotal security meeting between the Ogun State Government and key federal aviation and security agencies, aimed at ensuring a smooth and secure process for the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
The meeting, held on Monday at the airport, brought together stakeholders to fine-tune logistical and security plans for handling the large-scale movement of pilgrims. Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo, emphasized the airport's readiness, stating, "The airport possesses the required infrastructure, facilities and management capacity to handle Hajj operations." He confirmed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has already certified the facility for domestic commercial flights after granting all necessary approvals.
Uyiekpen Asuen of the NCAA provided federal validation, confirming that Gateway International Airport met all required operational standards. Crucially, he added that the facility is now "among the 17 airports across the country designated for Hajj operations." This designation marks a major milestone, placing the airport on the national list of approved departure points for pilgrims, which mandates specific and rigorous logistical and security protocols.
The collaboration underscored at the meeting is vital. Hajj operations are complex, extending beyond flight schedules to encompass extensive ground handling, crowd management, passenger processing, and coordination with international authorities in Saudi Arabia. The alignment of state and federal agencies is therefore essential to prevent disruptions and ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims from the moment they arrive at the airport.
With the regulatory hurdles cleared and security plans being finalized, Gateway International Airport is poised to become a key embarkation point for pilgrims from Ogun State and surrounding regions, offering a new and certified option for this significant journey.
