In a significant political realignment, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has formally defected from the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the national ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His camp described the move as a "necessary step for the greater good," while the France chapter of the APC immediately hailed it as a major political development.
This defection firmly places Zamfara, a key northwestern state long plagued by banditry and political rivalry, under the banner of the party controlling the federal government. The shift underscores the volatile and strategic nature of politics in Nigeria's troubled northwest region.
A Defection Amid Broader Insecurity
Lawal's party switch occurs against the backdrop of a severe and persistent security crisis across northern Nigeria. Other state executives are publicly grappling with the violence.
In Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has called on Muslims to use the final ten days of Ramadan to intensify prayers for an end to the protracted insecurity tormenting his state. Zulum, currently in Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj, stated he led other faithful in special prayers for lasting peace in Borno and Nigeria.
The Borno governor directly addressed recent coordinated Boko Haram attacks, urging that they not "dampen the spirit of resilience and unity of purpose to confront the common enemy." He also called on the Christian community observing Lent to join in the prayers and reassured citizens of continued government support for the military and security agencies.
Police Pledge in Kwara
Hundreds of miles away in Kwara State, the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, pledged on Monday to recapture all communities overrun by bandits. Addressing police officers in Ilorin, Disu detailed a strategy involving local communities, specifically noting the assistance of Fulani people.
"I say with all authority that we have a lot of Fulani people assisting us in doing our job," Disu stated, highlighting a community-based approach to the security challenge.
Implications of the Political Shift
The convergence of a major political defection with urgent security appeals from other leaders highlights the intertwined nature of governance and safety in the region. Lawal's move to the APC may be seen as an attempt to consolidate federal support for Zamfara's challenges, potentially influencing the political calculations of other governors in the northwest as the next election cycle approaches.
